To the Velvet Fog I say this.

One cannot overemphasize the importance of understanding how DNA damage affects the cell-cycle in eukaryotic cells. An understanding of cell-cycle progression and control has been instrumental in understanding the etiology of cancer and other diseases. Without such research, cancer treatment could not advance beyond the blunt instrument techniques of many chemotherapy treatments that are unable to distinguigh between malignant and healthy cells, which can lead to cures that are worse than the disease. Studies of cell-cycle control and DNA damage checkpoints (a mechanism that temporarily halts the cell-cycle to allow the cell time to repair DNA damage) have led to exciting new therapies that will be able to treat specifc cancers with drugs that only target malignant cells. They will also lead to treatment of cancers that were never before possible to treat.

So jest as much as you want about the frivolity of such research, but I for one have nothing but respect for such brave souls who sacrifice in order to improve the quality of life for our children and ourselves.

Besides, they get to titrate Phenolphthalein on fruit flies.

I you won't take my word for it you might want to check with some of the following: Alfred G. Gilman, Martin Rodbell, Leland H. Hartwell, Timothy Hunt, and Sir Paul M. Nurse.

It might be hard to get in touch with Leland but you should try with the others.
